The Abia State Government has begun a phased demolition of the famous Ekeoha Market – Shopping Centre – in Aba, in preparation for its remodeling.

The remodeling project, according to the Abia State government, is to bring the market to international standards, ensure the safety of traders and their customers, as well as open up the commercial city for more business opportunities.

The first phase of the demolition commenced on Thursday from the decked shops at Ehi Road section.

Governor Alex Otti, during the official flag of the reconstruction in August, assured the traders that original shop owners will not lose their spaces after the remodeling exercise.

Otti had assured the traders that the remodeling, which is a Public-Private Partnership, (PPP) project, will be done in phases to avoid disruption to their business.

However, despite the governor’s assurances, some aggrieved traders led by Chris Uruakpa approached an Aba State High Court presided by Justice C.K Nwankwo calling out the governor over the delay in the remodeling project in suit No: A/M228/2024.

Also, those affected in the first phase of the demolition have appealed for reconstruction of their shopping section in record time, to enable them return to business.
