Police arrest Chinese expatriate over death of Abia female crane operator

The police in Abia State have arrested a Chinese expatriate, Mr. GZ Zhen, at the Inner Galaxy Steel Company, Umuahala Asa, Ukwa West LGA, in connection with the death of a female crane operator identified as Ocheze Ogbonna.

Zhen was alleged to have attacked the female crane operator during a night shift duty at the company after she rejected his sexual advances. The female operator sustained injuries, which led to her death.

The incident sparked outrage in the area as youths protested the death of the crane operator, who also hailed from the host community.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abia Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka, who confirmed that Zhen is in custody, added that investigation has commenced into the matter.

Earlier, Chris Nkwonta, a member of the House of Representatives for Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency, had condemned the killing of Ocheze Ogbonna allegedly by the Chinese expatriate, seeking justice in the matter.

He said the late Ocheze Ogbonna hailed from his constituency hence he is duty-bound to seek justice for her.

He decried the manner in which the lady was “killed”, describing it as a total disregard for the sanctity of life and an act of hatred and wickedness.

The lawmaker urged the police to carry out thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that suspect, if found guilty, is punished according to the law.
