Northern elders warn Kano govt against scrapping emirates

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed concern over the unfolding Kano State emirate crisis, which led to the removal of the five first class emirs in the sSate.

The forum’s spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, on Friday, cautioned Governor Abba Yusuf and politicians involved to exercise restraint, and avoid violence while trying to settle political scores.

Governor Yusuf, on Thursday, reinstated Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano, four years after he was deposed. This was after the governor had signed the bill passed by the House of Assembly repealing the State Emirate Council Law 2019, which created five emirate councils.

The Assembly, on Thursday, passed the bill for the dissolution of the four additional emirates created by the immediate past administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and the removal of all five emirs.

Yusuf said he reinstated Sanusi in fulfillment of a campaign promise. The governor said the new law provides for the reinstatement of Sanusi as Emir of Kano and removal of the five emirs – Kano, Gaya, Karaye, Bichi and Rano.
