Irate youths raze church, police station in Kaduna

Pandemonium broke out Thursday morning when about 200 youths burnt down a Church and a police station in Narayi, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Reports say trouble started following the death of a boy who worked in a white garment Church.

Following the death of the boy, the rampaging youths had requested the police to hand over to them the pastor in charge of the church where the young man died.

The Police had taken the pastor into protective custody after he had reported that a youth doing some construction work for the church had died in the process.

Reports say the hoodlums outnumbered the Police personnel on duty, hence they abandoned their offices and fled, a situation the youths capitalized on, and torched the station.

An eyewitness said the hoodlums carted away some motorcycles from the station, and vandalized a car as well.

At the Church premises, four other buildings were pulled down, while the church was razed down completely.

The pastor of the church, Mr. Babatunde Shittu, had the benefit of police protection from being lynched by the mob.

Meanwhile, Governor Nasir el-Rufai has condemned the action of the youths, saying it is illegal for anyone or group to take the law into their hands.

His reaction to the burning of a Church and police station is contained in a statement on Thursday by his spokesperson, Mr. Samuel Aruwan.

The governor has ordered an investigation into the circumstances of death of the labourer, whose demise allegedly sparked off the riotous conduct, as well as the apprehension of all those who partook in or enabled the acts of arson.

The governor commiserated with the family of the deceased, but added that everyone who had concerns about the circumstances of his death would allow the law enforcement agencies to handle the matter.
