The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) plans to launch seven critical gas development projects (7CGDP) which will generate additional 15,000 megawatts of electricity in the country by 2020.
The 7CGDPs are scheduled to deliver about 3.4 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (bscfd), and will be fast tracked in line with a projected short, medium and long term supply gap.
Group Managing Director (GMD) of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, who was represented by the Chief Operating Officer, upstream division, of the NNPC, Mr. Bello Rabiu, made this known on Thursday, during the annual Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Oloibiri lecture series.
According to Baru, an expected rise in domestic gas demand of about seven bscfd which is projected to exceed gas supply, birthed the 7CGDPs. He said the projects will be situated in key locations around the country and will ultimately position Nigeria as a “regional hub for gas based industries including petrochemicals, chemicals, methanol, and fertilizers.”
