Obong of Calabar: Don’t test our will, Gov Otu warns ex-minister Anthony Ani

Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Out, has warned a former minister, Anthony Ani, over the tussle for the Obong of Calabar throne.

The warning came amid alleged actions and statements attributed to the ex-minister, which the government viewed as capable of threatening the existing peace in the State.

Governor Otu emphasized that it is unacceptable for Ani and his associates to make insinuations and provocative statements regarding the Obong of Calabar stool, especially after the State Government had taken a position pursuant to the Supreme Court ruling on the matter.

He stated: “We will no longer tolerate any situation that threatens the peace of the State. The Obong stool as one of the few Treaty Kings east of the Niger is highly revered and should be supported by all.”

Governor Otu also highlighted the government’s commitment to partnering with the Palace of Obong of Calabar in providing good governance for the people. He commended the 78th Efik monarch for his role in maintaining peace and stability and announced the administration’s plan to build a befitting palace for the Obong.

The traditional celebration, known as the 12th Utomo Obong Festival, was attended by notable personalities including former Governor Donald Duke, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, Prof. Eyo Etim Nyong, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Betta Edu.
