Our ancestor founded Lagos, Oba of Benin tells Sanwo-Olu

The Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, has disclosed that Lagos was founded by his ancestor, Prince Ado, the son of the first Oba of Benin.

The revered monarch made this revelation on Sunday evening during a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House, Marina.

The Oba said according to history, Prince Ado left Benin Kingdom in the 15th century and established a settlement on the island of Lagos, which later became the capital of the State.

He noted that Lagos and Benin share a common heritage and culture, urging the people to preserve their identity and value.

The Oba also revealed that he had supported the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the then candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.

According to the monarch, God had ordained Tinubu to be president of Nigeria, urging all Nigerians to support him to achieve a greater Nigeria.

The monarch said that Tinubu’s victory and emergence as the president of Nigeria shows God’s plan for him to rule the country.

For him, Tinubu has the vision and experience to lead the nation to the next level of development and prosperity.

He also emphasised the need for peaceful coexistence in the country, to achieve sustainable development in all areas of its economy. He said that diversity is a blessing for Nigeria and urged the people to iron out their differences and live as a family in peace, unity and harmony.

The Oba of Benin congratulated Governor Sanwo-Olu on his reelection and commended his giant strides in Lagos. He charged him not to rest on his oars to achieve greater heights in his second term in office. He also prayed for the success and wellbeing of the governor and the people of Lagos.
