Renowned Kannywood actor, Samanja Mazan Fama, known off-screen as Usman Baba Pategi, has reportedly died at the age of 84 years.
He reportedly died in Kaduna around 12:15am of Sunday, November 12, 2023.
One of his sons – Mohammad Usman – confirmed his death on behalf of the family.
The funeral prayer for the late actor will take place at 10 am at a mosque in Kabala Costain, Kaduna, as announced by Mohammad Usman.
Born on May 20, 1942, into the royal house of Pategi Emirate, Pategi had a distinguished military career, serving as an Army captain during the Nigerian Civil War. He trained at the Signal Training School, Apapa, and worked under Generals Sani Abacha and Sani Sami before retiring in 1985.

In 2010, Pategi had heart surgery in India to address a health issue. Notably, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, contributed N1.5 million towards the medical expenses.
Despite being the heir to the Etsu Pategi Emirate, Pategi chose to pursue a career in acting instead of accepting the throne. His dedication to his craft led him to decline the opportunity, leaving the throne to his brother.
Samanja Mazan Fama gained fame for his roles in popular Hausa films like “Samanja,” “Yusuf’s Ladan’s,” and “Zaman Duniya Iyawa Ne.” His notable portrayal in “Samanja” showcased his skill in blending Hausa, English, and Pidgin English, capturing the essence of how Nigerian soldiers communicate.
