A newborn baby boy, who was allegedly dumped in a pit toilet by its mother in Otuocha, Anambra East Local Government Area, has been rescued alive three days after birth.
The Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Affairs said that a 20-year-old mother, Nwaedoka Chidimma, from Izzi, Ebonyi State, gave birth to the baby on Sunday, August 27, 2023 and dumped it in the toilet.
One Esther Omesi, a farmer and a friend to Chidimma, said the suspect requested to stay at her place for a few days because of a farming job.
She narrated how the suspect started acting suspiciously on Sunday after she noticed that she was having stomach upset and then went to the pit to ease herself.
According to Omesi, Chidimma took time and later came out of the toilet, dripping with blood.
Omsesi said she called a nurse who inspected Chidimma, and revealed that the baby was gone.
She said that she thought that Chidinma had a stillbirth, and encouraged her to travel home to her parents and notify them of the development.
She revealed that they heard a baby’s cry on Tuesday morning, August 29, and quickly used a ladder to rescue the newborn after which they notified the relevant authorities.
When the attention of the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare Hon Ify Obinabo was called to the incident, she quickly Intervened by taking the infant to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital at Amaku Awka, for treatment,
The culprit was promptly arrested.
