Gunmen kill ASP, injure others at Lagos checkpoint

Unidentified gunmen, at the weekend, shot and killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and injured other cops during an attack on their checkpoint in the Ikorodu part of the State.

The attackers also fled with two service rifles belonging to the policemen said to have stationed at a pin down point at Enuren junction, Itokin, along the Ikorodu-Abeokuta expressway.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Friday night, barely 48 hours after gunmen killed three residents of Gowon Estate in Ipaja.

Reports suggest that the attack could have been executed by cultists, said to have been on rampage in parts of Lagos lately.

It was learnt that over four persons have been killed in the Ikorodu axis by the cultists suspected to be working for a notorious land grabber.

“The cultists in Emuren have become untouchable. They now work for a popular land grabber in Ikorodu.

“They have been on the rampage for sometime now in Ikorodu and environs. At least four persons have been cult by these cultists but nothing has happened to them.

“But this time around, I heard the police went to their hideout in Emuren on Saturday to fish them out. Police should not wait until their officers are killed before taking these criminals out of society. They need to raid them constantly, ” a source was quoted as saying.

Police spokesman for the State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation has commenced.

He declined to reveal the identity of the slain policeman until his family is notified.

Hundeyin also confirmed that two suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the killing of three civilians at Gowon Estate on Wednesday night.

He said the suspects were arrested on Thursday, and established to be directly involved in the incident.

“We are working on it and hoping to get more suspects. We are hopeful we will be able to crack that cultism gang because it was all about cultism,” said Hundeyin.
