Stakeholders mull LP-PDP alliance ahead March 11 guber poll in Lagos

Ahead of the March 11 governorship election in the country, there are indications that political stakeholders in Lagos are discussing the possibility of an alliance between the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) as a strategy to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State.

Reports say the political stakeholders in the State are already discussing with the frontline opposition parties with a view to coming together to wrestle power from the APC.

The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour had earlier hinted of talks with the PDP.

Reports also claim that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Olajide Adediran aka Jandor, is being persuaded to step down for his LP counterpart.

In persuading Jandor to step down, the stakeholders reckon that the Lagos voting population at this time would connect better with the Labour Party than the PDP, given the feat the former achieved at the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections in the State.

Unconfirmed report further claimed that the national leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo and others are in talks with Jandor to consider aligning with Rhodes-Vivour, whose party is believed to have a better competitive edge.

Promoters of the alliance believe that the outstanding performance of LP in the February 25 presidential election, where its candidate Peter Obi defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is convinced that an alliance with the PDP would make it easier to defeat the incumbent governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on March 11, 2023.

The ultimate aim, according to sources, is to defeat the APC, and free the State from Tinubu’s perceived grip on the power lever.

However, sources said that promoters of the alliance are facing the challenge of convincing the State PDP leaders that Labour Party has indeed displaced it (PDP) as the number one opposition party in Lagos, and therefore in a better stead to edge out the APC.
