No fewer than 15 persons were reportedly killed on Monday by suspected gunmen in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Reports have it that the victims were accosted and killed on their way back from the cross over service.
The attack occurred specifically in Kirigani and Oboh areas of Aligwu community in Omoku.
A resident, who reported the incident, alleged that the attackers were led by the younger brother of an ex-Nigeria Delta militant leader (names withheld).
The Chairman of ONELGA Local Government Area, Barr. Oosi Olisah, confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command also confirmed knowledge of the incident.
In October last year, the Nigerian Army had raided the home of a known militant, killed a number of his gang members and took over his property at Aligwu community.
Up north, in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State, gunmen also reportedly killed the chief of Numana, Dr. Gambo Makama and his wife.
Reports say the couple was killed at their residence in the early hours of new year day.
Chairman of the council, Abdulmumin Yakubu Ashafa reportedly confirmed the incident.
He said that Makama and his wife were attacked and killed at about 12:18am. The report said the motive of the attack could not immediately be established by security operatives.
In yet another incident, disaster struck in Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday, December 31, as high-tension electricity cable fell and electrocuted one person and destroyed several houses.
The incident, which happened at about 7.30pm, was said to have injured two persons at No. 17 Umo Orok Lane in the Calabar-South axis of the metropolis.
