Naira scarcity: Protest breaks out in Lagos, security operatives deployed to quell crisis

Pandemonium, in the early hours of Friday, broke out in some parts of Lagos, when persons suspected to be hoodlums allegedly stormed major roads to protest Naira scarcity in the State.

Similar violent protests have been reported in Edo, Oyo, and Ogun States, resulting in a number of casualties.

Report says the protesters stormed Mile-12, Ketu, Ojota area, along Ikorodu Road, and Iyana-Ipaja around 6am before it spread to other areas such as Agege and Iyana-Iba.

Motorists and residents who were already on their ways to different destinations hurriedly turned back in panic as the rioters went berserk with bonfire set across the road.

Vehicles coming from Ìkoròdù could not go beyond Mile 12 bridge, as they hurriedly made U-turn to their destinations.

The presence of the combine military and the policemen of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) at the scene did not deter the protesters as they confronted the security team.

However, most vehicles including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses were turned back to Ikorodu.

“Likewise, public buses are not working in Igando. This morning’s disturbance is all about the currency issues,” a commuter Mrs. Ronke Alimi, is quoted as saying in a report.

The areas have been thrown into chaos as policemen battle to restore normalcy.

Already, parents and guardians have reportedly started withdrawing their children and wards from schools in the area.

Meanwhile, a security and traffic alert has been given by the Lagos Police Command concerning the area.

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said calm has returned to the affected areas.
