Buhari to chair emergency Council of State meeting amid tension over fuel, Naira scarcity

President Muhammadu Buhari has convened an emergency meeting of the Council of State to hold on Friday amid spiraling crises arising from the scarcity of petrol and the redesigned Naira notes, and threatening to affect the conduct of the general elections.

Scheduled to take place at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja, the meeting starts at 10 am.

The national crises have led to protests in some parts of the country.

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, is expected to give an update on the new currency redesign policy scheduled to take place at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja, at 10 am.

Also, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu; and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, will brief the Council regarding their readiness for the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections, to be followed by the governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls on March 11.

The Council may likely take major decisions aimed at dousing the current tension in the country. 

Membership of the Council comprises President Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, former presidents, former heads of state, former chief justices of Nigeria, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, governors of the 36 states of the Federation and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
