Lagos drivers’ strike records partial compliance in Lekki-Epe axis

There was partial compliance along the Lekki-Epe route as Lagos commercial vehicle drivers embarked on strike Monday to protest alleged extortion by touts aka agbero.

While some commercial vehicle drivers observed the strike, several others were sighted plying their trade on major roads in the area.

However, transport fares literally shot up to the roof top. For instance, from Ajah to CMS, hitherto N500, cost between N800 and N1000 on Monday.

Although, he drivers claimed the high fuel prices and bad roads in the axis were the major reasons for the hike.

Nonetheless, commuters were also sighted trekking long distances hoping to get cheaper transportation means.

A man who identified himself simply as Mr. Samson, said that there was no way he could have stayed at home without going to work.

According to him, he shuttles from Awoyaya to Ajah, revealing that some drivers were protesting the extortion in Lakwe area.

Samson said: “Right now, protest is ongoing  in Lakwe but I didn’t join them because I need money. They are protesting because of the huge amount of money we pay to agberos.”

On why he did not join the protest, Samson said: “How can the strike be effective when drivers have families, children and bills to settle? Is it possible?

“Also, this strike can never be effective because there’s no union, no spokesperson and we don’t have security men backing us.”
