The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), in collaboration with the State government, has fashioned out strategies to enable residents pay their taxes and levies without much ado.
According to the Chairman/Chief Executive of AIRS, Mr. Richard Nwora Madeibo, a digital system for revenue collection is underway, which will eliminate the illegal collection of taxes by unauthorized persons, a practice that had hitherto robbed the State huge amounts in revenue.
A statement by Sylvia Tochukwu-Ngige, the Head, Taxpayer Education and Enlightenment Team, quoted Madiebo as saying that henceforth, residents of the State are to pay their levies and taxes through any commercial bank of their choice using the Anambra State Identification Number (ASIN), after which an electronic receipt will be generated with a QR code for authentication.
She advised taxpayers to verify their payment by using the QR code, USSD or APP before leaving the point of payment.
The innovation brings to an end, the era when unauthorized persons (Agberos) harassed and intimidated residents over revenue collection.
Tochukwu-Ngige said: “The expectation is that residents of Anambra State should embrace this innovation with joy, and give the maximum support as it will end the era of harassment and extortion by the Agberos in the State, and usher in a new era where taxes and levies are paid duly by citizens electronically and in return, the citizens see their money working for them.”
