* Make reference to 2019 Abia guber poll figures from Obingwa LGA
A chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Sir Chikwe Udensi, has applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Amended Electoral Act Bill into law, saying it will curb the incidence of concocted election figures.
Udensi, in commending the president for signing the bill, made reference to the controversial results from Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State during the 2019 governorship election.
There were allegations that the number of votes that gave Governor Okezie Ikpeazu victory in his Obingwa Local Government Area was over-inflated to the tune of 82,000.
Udensi described the new law as a step in the right direction, even though it is not all that is required to give credibility to Nigeria’s electoral process.
The Abia State governorship aspirant also commended the leadership of the National Assembly for ensuring that the country gets an enhanced legal framework ahead of the 2023 general elections.
The amended Act signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, among other things, provides for electronic transmission of election results from polling units, which would hopefully curb the manipulation of figures.
