Shops, homes razed in Onitsha petrol tanker blast

A patrol tanker exploded at the Upper Iweka area of Onitsha, Anambra State, on Friday, resulting into a fire incident which razed several shops and residential houses.

The incident reportedly occurred around 8:30am in front of the Relief market, left many shops and buildings around the scene burnt.

Reports say the blast came from an articulated truck which broke down at the bad portion of the busy Onitsha-Owerri expressway.

Expectedly, the incident caused traffic gridlock around the axis, while fire fighters from Delta State joined their Anambra counterparts in the battle to put out the blaze.

Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the fire came from a tanker laden with petrol, which fell at the Obodoukwu junction, along the Onitsha-Owerri road.

He assured that the blaze is being contained by fire fighters.
