ANLCA accuses shipping firms of extorting importers, agents

The National President, Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Mr. Tony Iju Nwabunike, has alleged that Nigerian shipping companies extort importers and agents to the tune of N12 billion annually.

He said equipment detention charges of N200, 000 per 1×40 container and N100, 000 per 1×20 container, plus backhand collection of N150, 000 on empty containers and several others, which constitute extortion, cause cumulative losses of over N1 billion monthly to importers, customs brokers and freight forwarders.

Nwabunike stated this in a keynote address titled, ‘Reversing Nigeria’s Unproductive Port System for Efficiency’, during a Port Industry Town Hall meeting in Lagos, under the theme: ‘Towards Hitch-Free Port Operations in Nigeria’.
