Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has warned the staff against collection of illegal fees from new students.
Prof Obi gave the warning through a statement by the Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe.
She urged the staffers to guide new students appropriately rather than extorting them.
“The attention of the university’s management has been drawn to reports alleging that members of staff are extorting money from new students.
“Management has cautioned against this unwholesome and unethical practice. It is wrong and condemnable,” he said.

She added that the university leadership would sanction any member of staff found soliciting or collecting illegal fees from new students.
“Management shall closely monitor the activities of staff, and erring staff shall be adequately sanctioned,” the statement warned.
