- Greeted with cheers, applause
President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday, officially welcomed the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, back to the Upper Chamber.
Kalu’s resumption was described as a “triumphal” entry as he was greeted with cheers from hundreds of staff, security personnel, lawmakers and other well wishers who gathered to catch a glimpse and welcome the Chief Whip after his six months absence.
The former governor of Abia State, who is the Chief Whip, arrived at the Senate wing of the National Assembly Complex at exactly 9:00am.
He exchanged pleasantries with his colleagues and acknowledged greetings from legislative staff and security operatives.
Speaking with journalists on arrival at the entrance to the Senate chamber, Kalu described his experience as an occurrence of fate.
He said: “I just want to thank God for everything that has happened. It is the will of God. I want to urge Nigerians to keep hope alive.” We just give thanks to God, Go and thank God for me.
Kalu was released after over six months wrongful incarceration at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.
He and others were convicted and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment over N7.1 billion alleged fraud, a verdict the Supreme Court nullified.
