- Provides Anambra rice for senior citizens
The Anambra State government has announced the closure of the Onitsha Head Bridge due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, said the action is in line with measures to curtail the spread of the virus.
“This is to notify Ndi Anambra and motorists in the state, and those wishing to pass through Anambra state that the Government of Delta state has announced the closure of all its land borders with effect from 6 am on Sunday, 29th of March 2020.
“Motorists are advised not to travel through the Niger Bridge Head, Onitsha to avoid queuing and putting pressure on the bridge. Motorists will not be able to drive into Delta State as a result of the border closure order in place.
“The government of Anambra State is also announcing the closure of Onitsha Head bridge, through Upper Iweka and Zik’s Mausoleum from midnight on Monday, 30th March 2020 to discourage vehicles queuing up on the bridge. The security agencies are hereby directed to enforce this.”
“Motorists should also note that the government of Enugu state has announced the closure of its land borders with effect from 6PM on Tuesday, March 31, 2020.
“Only vehicles transporting food items and medicines will be allowed passage. The government of Anambra state hereby reiterates its earlier directive for people to stay at home and observe strictly the coronavirus advisory and directives earlier issued.” the statement read.
Meanwhile, from April 1, the government says it will begin the distribution of Anambra Rice to all men and women in the state from the age of 70 years and above.
It is a stimulus package meant for Ndi Anambra
on the orders of Governor Willie Obiano.
According to the governor, sharing of bags of rice “is one of the many
interventions the state government will be making to help cushion the economic
and other effects of the coronavirus on Ndi Anambra.”
“For a start, we will share 200 bags of rice each to the 179 communities we have in the state. That’s about 35,800 bags in total. My government will announce further stimulus package in due course.”
