Bianca Ojukwu gets top Commonwealth appointment

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, has been appointed Vice-Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).

The appointment was announced during CMAG’s high-level meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2026) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

The diplomatic milestone places Nigeria in a key leadership role within the Commonwealth body tasked with protecting democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law across its 56 member states.

CMAG, currently chaired by Malta’s H.E. Chris Fearne, is a rotating panel of foreign ministers mandated to monitor compliance with the Commonwealth’s core political values. Established in 1995 under the Millbrook Commonwealth Action Plan, the group serves as the primary mechanism for addressing serious or persistent breaches of democratic standards among member nations.

Initially created to respond to unconstitutional overthrows of government and military coups, CMAG expanded its scope in 2011. Today, the group actively addresses issues such as electoral irregularities, judicial interference, executive overreach, restrictions on political participation, and press freedom violations.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Dr. Magnus Eze, Special Assistant on Communication and New Media to the Foreign Minister, the appointment reinforces Nigeria’s proactive role in international diplomacy and institutional accountability.

”Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s emergence as Vice-Chair places Nigeria in a strategic leadership position within one of the Commonwealth’s most consequential ministerial mechanisms,” the statement read.

The week-long CHOGM summit brings together global leaders and delegates, with the Head of the Commonwealth, His Majesty King Charles III, in attendance.
