The of Argentina supporters have launched an online campaign calling on FIFA to replay the 2026 World Cup final following the country’s 1-0 defeat to Spain, with the petition attracting more than 80,000 signatures.
The petition, created on change.org by supporter Gisela Sánchez, accuses Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić of making controversial decisions that allegedly influenced the outcome of the final, which Spain won through Ferran Torres’ extra-time strike.
Supporters behind the campaign argue that several officiating decisions unfairly favoured Spain, including the dismissal of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández after receiving a second yellow card during the match.
The petition also points to videos circulating on social media, claiming they show questionable refereeing calls. However, no verifiable evidence has been presented to support allegations that the match was manipulated.
Part of the petition read:
“This is not just a matter of justice for Argentina, but for the future of world football. We need to guarantee the integrity of referees at all levels of the sport.”
It continued: “Therefore, we ask FIFA to review these incidents with seriousness and transparency, and to consider replaying the final, this time without the influence of a corrupt referee. It is crucial that an impartial and fair referee officiate the match so that the result truly reflects the merit of the teams involved.”
The campaign concludes by urging football supporters worldwide to back the initiative, saying fans must not tolerate corruption in football and should demand fairness in the game.
Despite the growing number of signatures, the petition carries no legal or sporting authority. FIFA regulations only allow matches to be replayed in exceptional circumstances, such as serious breaches of competition rules, and there is no indication that football’s governing body is considering a replay of the final.
The development comes just four years after more than 200,000 French fans signed a similar petition demanding a replay of the 2022 World Cup final after Argentina’s victory in Qatar. That campaign also had no effect on FIFA’s decision, with the result remaining unchanged.
