US mission in Nigeria suspends social media updates

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of regular updates on its official X account due to a lapse in US government appropriations, while maintaining that passport and visa services will continue as circumstances allow.

The mission disclosed this in a post on its verified X handle on Saturday, stating that updates on the account would be limited until full operations resume, except for urgent safety and security information.

It added that scheduled passport and visa services in the United States, as well as at US embassies and consulates abroad, would continue depending on how the situation develops.

The mission advised members of the public seeking information on services and operating status to visit the official US travel website, noting that further updates would only be issued once full operations resume, except in cases involving urgent safety or security concerns.

The statement read: “Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information.

“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits. We will not update this account until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information. For information on our services and operating status, visit travel.state.gov.”

This comes after the US government entered a partial shutdown when a midnight funding deadline passed without Congress approving a 2026 budget, although disruptions were expected to be limited as the House is set to move early next week to ratify a Senate-backed deal.

The funding lapse followed a breakdown in negotiations sparked by Democratic outrage over the killing of two protesters in Minneapolis by federal immigration agents, which stalled talks on additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
