The police in Osun State have arrested four suspects, including an imam, in connection with the death of an unidentified man in Osogbo.
The arrests were confirmed on Saturday by the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, who said the incident occurred on Friday around a mosque in the State capital.
According to Ojelabi, the police received a distress report that a man had been assaulted in the vicinity of a mosque in Osogbo.
Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found the victim unconscious with visible bruises across his body, suggesting he had been severely beaten.
“The victim was promptly taken to Jaleyemi Hospital for medical attention,” he said, adding that “However, he was confirmed dead by medical personnel on arrival.”
Following the confirmation of death, the police returned to the scene and arrested four individuals, including the imam of the Ogo-Oluwa Mosque, where the victim was discovered.
Ojelabi said investigations were ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the level of involvement of each suspect.
Meanwhile, preliminary findings by the News Agency of Nigeria indicated that the deceased had gone to the Ogo-Oluwa Mosque for early morning prayers. During the service, he reportedly attacked the imam, prompting congregants to intervene to prevent him from causing harm.
The man was said to have been overpowered and beaten by some worshippers, after which he became unconscious.
Police authorities assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to unravel the full details of the incident and ensure that justice is served.
