Tinubu asks Senate to confirm Oyewole Kayode as Justice of Supreme Court

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm Justice Oyewole Kayode as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The request was contained in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at plenary on Tuesday.

The letter read: “Pursuant to Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended…

“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Hon. Justice Oyewole Kayode as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nomination expeditiously, please accept the assurances of my highest regards”.

Akpabio, thereafter, referred the letter to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to report back as soon as possible.

The National Judicial Council (NJC), at its 110th Meeting held on January 13, 2026 recommended Justice Oyewole for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, alongside 35 other candidates for various judicial offices across the country.

Justice Oyewole was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State on May 24, 2001 and has served in various divisions and capacities before he was elevated to the Court of Appeal on March 3, 2014.

He has served in Makurdi Division (April 2014–December 2014), Calabar Division (December 2014–August 2018), Enugu Division (August 2018–December 2023), Abuja Division (December 2023–April 2025).

He is currently the Presiding Justice, Enugu Division of Court of Appeal.
