EEDC explains blackout in 5 Southeast states after national grid collapse

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has announced that gradual power supply restoration has commenced, hours after the national grid collapsed at about 12:40pm on Friday, January 23, 2026.

Spokesperson of the DisCo, Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

EEDC attributed the power outage to the national grid failure, which affected parts of Abia (Umuahia), Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

He, however, noted that “gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, and we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth and timely restoration across the affected areas,” he stated.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator confirmed earlier that electricity restoration had begun across parts of the country following the grid disturbance.
