Insecurity: Lagos govt deploys over 2,000 CCTV cameras

Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has disclosed that his administration has expanded surveillance coverage across the State with the deployment of over 2,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

The move is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and improve public safety in the metropolis.

The governor made this disclosure during his appearance on “Journalists’ Hangout,” a live programme on TVC News. During the session, he outlined key achievements and projects under the theme, “How We Are Transforming Lagos.”

The governor also announced that construction on the second phase of the Lagos Blue Line rail project is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed within the next 18 months.

He noted that the rail expansion is a critical component of the state’s transport strategy, aimed at easing traffic congestion and providing reliable mass transit for residents.

Addressing the perennial traffic challenges in the state, the Governor attributed the pressure on Lagos roads to rapid population growth and continuous migration into the city.

Despite these constraints, he said the government remains committed to improving urban mobility through sustained investment in transport infrastructure and urban planning.

He emphasised the importance of alternative transportation options, particularly water transport, noting that a significant number of Lagos residents could be moved through the state’s waterways to reduce congestion on major roads.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Government is implementing an integrated urban mass transportation system that connects rail, road, and water travel to create a seamless commuting network.

On security, the governor stated that the expanded CCTV network now covers strategic locations across metropolitan Lagos.

He explained that this enhances real-time monitoring, crime prevention, and rapid response by security agencies.
